Before the interview

Review the CV and application in advance. Arrive already familiar with their background so the time is spent exploring it, not reading it cold.
Block real time. Protect the slot from shift interruptions — a rushed interview reads as disorganisation.
Agree who's interviewing. Decide who leads, who covers safeguarding and compliance, and who covers values and fit.
Prepare a private space. Confidentiality matters, especially when discussing safeguarding scenarios.
Have your questions ready. A consistent structure keeps the process fair and defensible at inspection.

Structuring the conversation

Open with a warm welcome and outline how the interview will run — it settles nerves and gets more genuine answers. Move from values and motivation, into safeguarding and scenario-based questions, then role-specific competency, and finish with time for their questions.

Sell the role

Be specific about the team and culture — generic praise doesn't land the way real detail does.
Talk about training and supervision. Ongoing support and development matter to good candidates in this sector.
Be upfront on practicals. Shift patterns, service user group, and start date — ambiguity costs you candidates later.
Give them space to ask real questions — treat it as a two-way conversation, not a one-way assessment.

After the interview

Decide quickly. Strong candidates rarely stay on the market long — aim to give feedback within 24–48 hours.
Call your consultant with feedback either way, so we can keep the process moving and manage the candidate's expectations.
Start compliance checks early. DBS, references, right to work, and any sector-specific checks — starting promptly avoids delays to a start date.
Make the offer personally where you can. A quick call from the service, not just paperwork, makes candidates feel wanted.
